June 8, 2009 Lawton speaks at Fourteenth Annual Heartland Conference

 

During the Fourteenth Annual Heartland Conference, Lt. Governor Lawton addressed campaign finance and ethics officials from across the Midwest at the Hilton in Madison. She discussed the importance of their work in maintaining a fully-functioning, responsive democratic government and the need for aggressive campaign finance reform nationally and in Wisconsin.

 

June 9, 2009 Milwaukee High School of the Arts commencement ceremony

 

Lt. Governor Lawton was the keynote speaker Tuesday night at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts Class of 2009’s commencement ceremony. Lt. Governor Lawton highlighted the importance of developing creativity capacities in Wisconsin’s children, to position Lt. Governor Lawton and Milwaukee High School of the Arts Principal Barry Applewhitethem well to be innovators and entrepreneurs. She noted that arts education works effectively toward that end, and that creativity development should be integrated across disciplines in all Wisconsin schools.

“Today, business performance and national prosperity depend on the creation and application of new knowledge, on our ability to innovate. Learning creativity through the arts introduces discipline, rigor, bold vision and innovation,” Lawton said.

 

The Milwaukee High School of the Arts focuses its curriculum on dance, writing, theatre, visual arts and music and prepares students for professions in the arts.

 

June 11, 2009 Lawton travels to Green Bay for town hall meeting with President Obama

 

Lt. Governor Lawton traveled to Green Bay’s Southwest High School Thursday to attend President Obama’s health care town hall meetingLt. Governor Lawton traveled to Green Bay’s Southwest High School Thursday to attend President Obama’s health care town hall meeting with 1600 Green Bay residents, elected officials and community leaders.

 

During the town hall, President Obama described his plan to work with Congress on a comprehensive health care reform bill that cuts costs for the average family and business and expands access to the uninsured.

 

President Obama selected Green Bay for this town hall because it is one of the nation’s highest health-value communities and has used digital medical records, health screenings and physician collaboration to reduce costs.

 

During a question-and-answer session, President Obama discussed his support for a public health insurance option that would compete with private insurers and drive down medical costs.

After the town hall meeting, Lt. Governor Lawton met with President Obama to welcome him to her home town of Green Bay and further discuss his vision for health care reform.

June 12, 2009 Wisconsin Arts Board Meeting

 

Lt. Governor Lawton participated in a conference call with the Wisconsin Arts Board Friday to award Wisconsin Arts Jobs grants. Wisconsin Arts Jobs was authorized in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and provides one-time grants to Wisconsin arts organizations in order to help them avoid lay-offs and sustain their operations during this destabilizing economic crisis.
