Monday, March 30 - Learn, Earn and Prosper: Wisconsin Teen Girls Forward (LEAP!)
Lt. Governor Lawton urged more than 500 high school girls, their parents and teachers, to tool up well to lead. She spoke at the Learn, Earn and Prosper” Wisconsin Teen Girls Forward (LEAP) 2009 conference held in Madison.
Lawton spoke to the importance of the girls preparing themselves well with a high degree of literacy in science and math, of the opportunities that would follow, and of the state’s very real need for them to then provide leadership in both the public and private sectors in Wisconsin. The day-long conference included an education and career fair and hands-on workshops.
The conference was sponsored by the Wisconsin Women’s Council.
Tuesday, March 31 – Trade Talks with Taiwan
Lt. Governor Lawton welcomed Taipei Economic & Cultural Office Director General Perry Pei-hwang Shen to the Capitol on Tuesday.
The two discussed the importance of the trade relationship between Wisconsin and Taiwan, and opportunities to expand trade in areas of mutual benefit. Mr. Shen proudly noted that Taiwan routinely purchases many Harley Davidson motorcycles from Wisconsin for their police force, and that more than 300 Taiwanese students attend UW-Madison.
Wednesday, April 1 - De Pere Area Chamber of Commerce President’s Gala
Lt. Governor Lawton celebrated the installation of President Becky Fabry at the De Pere Area Chamber of Commerce President's Gala.
In her keynote address, the lieutenant governor challenged the young Chamber to capitalize on the rich history and unique qualities of De Pere as they advance work to develop a long term plan for a sustainable local economy. She applauded the close collaboration between city government and the Chamber, and outlined how state and federal government may support their success.
Thursday, April 2 –Celebrity Reader in Fond du Lac
Lt. Governor Lawton accepted Mr. Todd Krueger’s 4th grade class’s invitation to be their Celebrity Reader, Thursday, at Elizabeth Waters Elementary School in Fond du Lac. The lieutenant governor shared stories of hiding in the top of an apple tree with a book when she was their age, and read many beloved poems from Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends.
Lawton also took time to answer questions about the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and her work in the capitol.
UW-Oshkosh Social Justice Week and 9th Annual Celebration of Woman
Lt. Governor Lawton headlined UW-Oshkosh’s Gender Equity Council's Ninth-Annual Celebration of Women, this year a centerpiece in the campus’s first UW-Oshkosh’s Social Justice week.
Lt. Governor Lawton thanked Chancellor Rick Wells for his leadership in putting the issues that define the lives of women and their families front and center. She shared her analysis of the status of women today, in Wisconsin and worldwide, described how that threatens our economic and state security, and suggested strategies for progress.
