Tuesday, February 24 - State of the Tribes Address

Lt. Governor Lawton attended the fifth annual State of the Tribes Address held in the Capitol on TuesdayLt. Governor Lawton attended the fifth annual State of the Tribes Address held in the Capitol on Tuesday. Arlyn Ackley, Chairman of the Sokaogon Chippewa Community, delivered the address which was followed by a reception in the Assembly Parlor.

 

First held in 2005, the State of the Tribes Address is designed to improve state-tribal relations by facilitating an open dialogue between tribal leaders and Wisconsin lawmakers. Members of both the state Assembly and Senate, along with members of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, attended the joint session.  Lawton has attended the event since its inception.

Wednesday, February 25:

Superior Days!


Lt. Governor Lawton joined over 200 elected officials and constituents from Northwestern Wisconsin participating in Superior Days in Madison for breakfast on Wednesday. In her remarks, Lt. Governor Lawton outlined how the state’s proposed budget will impact people living in Northwestern Wisconsin.
She praised former Representative Frank Boyle’s years of leadership in the State Assembly and welcomed freshman Rep. Nick Milroy as her new colleague in the Capitol.

Superior Days is an annual grassroots effort to bring legislative issues from the northern part of the state to the attention of state lawmakers. Over a two day period, members of the Superior Days delegation visit legislators from every part of the state to help them better understand both their differences and shared agenda, and to advocate issues unique to the northwest region of the state.

Lt. Governor Lawton welcomed a delegation of mayors and local officials from northwestern Wisconsin communities to her office on Wednesday afternoon.

Lt. Governor Lawton listened to concerns and opportunities for the state and local governments to continue to work together for a strong economic outlook for that region of the state.

Phillips Middle School Students Visit the Capitol


Lt. Governor Lawton later welcomed Middle School Students from Phillips to her office on Wednesday.  The students traveled 220 miles from the north to visit Lt. Governor Lawton, watch a Badger basketball practice, tour the Veterans Museum and tour the capitol. Lt. Green Business Roundtable

Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton gathered with a dozen business and technology leaders and energy consultants Wednesday at a Green Business Roundtable at Monona Terrace in Madison.Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton gathered with a dozen business and technology leaders and energy consultants Wednesday at a Green Business Roundtable at Monona Terrace in Madison.  The roundtable was designed for participants to form partnerships across green and technology industries and develop strategies to increase collaboration between the business and conservation communities. 

Lawton opened the discussion by stating that economic growth and environmental preservation/energy conservation are not mutually exclusive goals.


“When you consider the immediate goals of private enterprise and conservation groups, you discover that maybe they aren’t so different: sustainable profitability is really not possible without integration of a conservation ethic,” said Lawton.

 

A variety of ways to collaborate were presented at the roundtable discussion focusing on energy and water conservation, updating and retrofitting buildings, building weatherization, and accessing federal stimulus dollars to create green-collar jobs. 

 

Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters Board Chair and Wisconsin Technology Council member Dan Collins help to pull the unique group together.

Conservationists Descend on the Capitol

Lt. Governor Lawton joined over six hundred conservationists for Conservation Lobby Day at Monona Terrace in Madison on Wednesday.Lt. Governor Lawton joined over six hundred conservationists for Conservation Lobby Day at Monona Terrace in Madison on Wednesday. Lawton gave a warm welcome to the group, commending their environmental efforts, stating her support for their platform and urging them to continue pressing for change through political action.

First held in 2005, Conservation Lobby Day is an annual event designed to bring constituents and legislators together to discuss conservation issues in Wisconsin for the upcoming year.

Lawton Celebrates Black History Month with University of Wisconsin Wind Ensemble

 

In celebration of Black History Month, Lt. Governor Lawton narrated a performance of Aaron Copeland’s Portrait of Lincoln with the University of Wisconsin – Madison Wind Ensemble on Wednesday evening in Mills Hall of the University of Wisconsin – Madison Humanities Building. In celebration of Black History Month, Lt. Governor Lawton narrated a performance of Aaron Copeland’s Portrait of Lincoln with the University of Wisconsin – Madison Wind Ensemble on Wednesday evening in Mills Hall of the University of WisconsinMadison Humanities Building.

 

The program also included a spoken word performance by First Wave, Gunther Schuller's Blue Dawn into White Heat by the Sun Prairie High School jazz band, and Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus by the Holy Redeemer Church of God in Christ Gospel Choir.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Thursday, February 26 - Historic Stoughton Marketing Conference

Lt. Governor Lawton delivered the opening keynote address for the Historic Stoughton Marketing Conference in Stoughton on Thursday. Speaking before an audience of elected officials, community and business leaders gathered in the historic Stoughton Opera House, Lawton discussed the importance of local culture and heritage in developing an authentic brand to promote economic growth.

 

The conference was organized by the Historic Stoughton Business Alliance and the Communication Team, LLC in conjunction with the City of Stoughton.

 

 

Friday, February 27 – Creative Visitors

Founder of Broadjam.com, Roy Elkins, and legendary music executive Paul Broucek visited Lt. Governor Lawton in the Capitol on Friday to talk about music licensing and placement of music in television and film.  Paul and Roy both voiced support for the tax incentives for the film and video game industry.  Paul’s credit list includes Lord of the Rings, Austin Powers and numerous other films.
